Before the bricks are loaded into the kiln, they are sprinkled
with carbon powder.
Being fired at a high temperature causes them to start to melt, giving the bricks

The process

Before the bricks are loaded into the kiln, coal is sprinkled in between the bricks.
Being fired at a high temperature gives the bricks a different colour in some spots and causes them to start to melt.
